Daniel Essig
Limited to twelve participants.
eveloped as early as the 4th century, this Ethiopian binding style has withstood the test of time.
You will begin by constructing a miniature paste board model with papyrus covers. Making this basic model paves the way for you to engage fully in the workshop's focus — the Sewn-Board Coptic Binding.
The elegant Coptic sewing structure combined with wooden covers opens a wide range of possibilities for both the beginner and the advanced bookbinder. As time allows, Dan will share information on the various features he includes in his own bindings, e.g., mica windows.
In order to gain a better understanding of the basics of woodworking, you will use simple hand tools when you drill, shape, and smooth your book covers. This is an essential aspect of this workshop.
We will discuss finishing methods, and you will seal your wooden covers with milk paint and a coating of wax. Your binding will include leather closures.
(This workshop is not currently on the schedule. You may to request that we offer it sometime in the future.)
