This and the following images illustrate what you will make in this workshop.

t’s hard to imagine a material more crucial to the book artist than paper.

In this workshop, we will examine the physical properties of paper and play with its creative possibilities. Our workshop activities will be designed to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of paper, and to build awareness of its working properties and its potential in bookmaking.

On the first day, we will look carefully at a wide variety of contemporary Western papers—handmade and machine-made papers, European and North American papers, art papers and printing papers—in order to understand how each serves the artist and the bookmaker.

Each participant will leave with a collection of 4” x 4” samples of Western papers, accompanied by a printed guide to their use and a glossary of paper terms.

We will also experiment with techniques for tearing, cutting, folding, scoring, embossing, slotting, weaving, and other paper alterations, while building a collection for future reference.

On the second day we will play with the creative possibilities of paper without the use of other art materials. Using an accordion book format with framed pages and hard covers, we will create individual sample books, each becoming a small gallery of paper techniques intended to serve as inspiration for other bookmaking applications.

There are no prerequisites for this workshop.
